CMP’s First Shot Ceremony Observes WWII Battles, Triumphs of Decorated Olympian

CAMP PERRY, OH – The Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) ceremonial First Shot Ceremony on July 7, 2014 at Rodriguez Range in Camp Perry, OH, celebrated more than the beginnings of the National Matches – it also commemorated the sacrifices of America’s Greatest Generation. The date of the ceremony coincidentally fell on the day two significant World War II battles transpired, sparking the need to honor the overlapping historical moments through words, sights and reenactments.

Over 450 Attend Ceremonial Opening of Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry

CAMP PERRY, OH – On July 7, 2014, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) celebrated a monumental marker in its history with the dedication of the new Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center, located within Camp Perry in Port Clinton, OH. Around 450 guests toured the center throughout the day to see the state-of-the-art electronic air gun range, modern architecture and design, as well as display cases that feature authentic memorabilia from the many accomplishments of the center’s namesake, Gary Anderson.

Skills Tested for All Ages During Rimfire Sporter Event at National Matches

CAMP PERRY, Ohio – One of the most popular events of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) National Rifle Matches is always the Rimfire Sporter Match, fired this year on August 2 at Camp Perry. The match is perfect for first time shooters, to prepare them for competition-style shooting, as well as experienced marksmen looking to rekindle a nostalgic connection with a .22 rifle.

Elite Junior Marksmen Determined at CMP National Air Rifle Championships and National Junior Olympics

CAMP PERRY, OH – Junior air rifle competitors and supporters from around the country ventured to the new Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center June 24-28 to compete at the USA Shooting National Junior Olympics, as well as the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Three Position Air Rifle Championships. The week marked the end of a competitive expedition that began in November and was the last opportunity for some competitors at air rifle glory.

Right on target, Whitewood girl breaks 1997 SD 4-H Shooting Sports record in air pistol division, brother places at nationalsBy Heather Murschel Black Hills Pioneer – WHITEWOOD – A Whitewood girl has broken the state 4-H Shooting Sports record that has been in place for 17 years. Rose Smith, 11, is a member of the Range Riders 4-H Club out of St. Onge and the Lawrence County Sharpshooters club. As a beginner, she was pretty happy after placing first in the air pistol division at the state 4-H Shooting Sports Competition held in Fort Pierre this March. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that she learned she broke a record held since 1997, and now she has a little more to brag about. Read the complete article.

USAMU makes clean sweep of 2014 NRA National Pistol ChampionshipsBy SFC Raymond Piper, USAMU PAO – CAMP PERRY, Ohio — It was a historic performance for U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) shooters at the National Rifle Association (NRA) National Pistol Championship as Service Pistol Team members took the top three positions out of 656 competitors. Staff. Sgt. Patrick Franks claimed the coveted national title with a total score of 2649 with 147x (out of 2700). The runner-up was Sgt.1st Class James Henderson with a total score of 2649-131 and third place went to Sgt. Greg Markowski with a total score of 2640-127. To top it off, the USAMU won the overall team championship to complete the sweep. “I don’t think there has been team domination like this at nationals, ever,” Henderson said. News from the CMP

The CMP has scheduled two JMIC Master Instructor Courses in August. The JROTC Marksmanship Instructor Course, better known as “JMIC,” is a marksmanship training course that must be completed by Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC instructors before they can teach air rifle marksmanship to JROTC cadets. The class in Anniston, AL, will be held 5 August and the class at Camp Perry, in Port Clinton, OH, will be held on 7 August. Visit www.thecmp.org/Training/JMIC.htm for more information.

The 11th Western CMP Games and Creedmoor Cup Matches are co-sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program and Creedmoor Sports, Inc. and will be held at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona, on 10-19 October 2014. All interested shooters, whether new or experienced, recreation-oriented shooters or national championship contenders are invited to participate in these unique, national-level competitions.

Open Public Shooting

CMP Marksmanship Centers

Tuesday & Thursday Evenings

Anniston, AL

Shooters, including aspiring new shooters, adult and youth, who live in the Anniston, Alabama, area are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to do practice shooting at the Marksmanship Center air gun ranges. Both 80-point, 10-meter air gun ranges are fully equipped with electronic targets that accommodate air rifle, air pistol or National Match Air Rifle shooting. Rental equipment is available for a small fee.

Open Public Shooting will not be held in the month of July in Port Clinton, OH. The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center will be hosting the National Match Air Gun Events which are open to the public.
